I love hymns, probably because I grew up in the Methodist church, where we sing a lot of hymns. My plan is to share with you one hymn every Sunday this year. Some of them will be pretty well-known, others more obscure.
This week's hymn is a very well known one by Fanny Crosby!
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight!
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest!
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
-Fanny Crosby
Aren't these words wonderful? Fanny Crosby also speaks of knowing Jesus as a foretaste of God's glory. The line about visions of rapture is particularly powerful, since she was blind since she was a very young child. Yet, in her Savior, she was able to see!
My favorite lines in this hymn are the last line of each verse: "Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood", "Echoes of mercy, whispers of love", and "Filled with his goodness, lost in His love". They are such a great summary of the abundance, power and sweetness of God's love!
Be blessed and shine, lost in His love!
One of my favorite!
