Hymn-ful Sundays! "As the Deer"

This week's hymn is by Martin J. Nystrom, and is another newer one (written in 1981). The format is hymn-like, but it's mostly sung as a praise and worship song. The lyrics were inspired by the words of Psalm 42.

About the writer: Marty Nystrom is an American songwriter, who has written more than 70 songs and sung as a worship leader on several albums.

As the deer pants for the water

So my soul longs after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship Thee

Chorus
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship Thee

I want You more than gold or silver
Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye

You're my friend and You are my brother
Even though You are a king
And I love You more than any other,
So much more than anything
Martin J Nystrom

In Psalm 42:2, David speaks of longing after God in the same way that a deer pants for water. It paints the picture of a God who is absolutely essential to our survival. In this hymn, the writer tells us why: it is God who is our strength, our shield, our heart's desire. These words tell of how much we can truly desire God, and the multitude of roles that God plays in our lives. God indeed is our everything.

Be blessed and shine, panting after Him!
