Hymn-ful Sundays! "It Passeth Knowledge"

This week's hymn is one by Mary Shekleton. She is not quite as well known as some of the other hymn writers that I've featured here, but she was an invalid for many years, and wrote many hymns during that time. "It Passeth Knowledge" is one of the most well-known of these.

It passeth knowledge, that dear love of Thine,
My Savior, Jesus; yet this soul of mine
Would of Thy love in all its breadth and length,
Its height and depth, its everlasting strength,
Know more and more.

It passeth telling, that dear love of Thine,
My Savior, Jesus; yet these lips of mine
Would fain proclaim to sinners, far and near,
A love which can remove all guilty fear,
And love beget.

It passeth praises, that dear love of Thine,
My Savior, Jesus; yet this heart of mine
Would sing that love, so full, so rich, so free,
Which brings a rebel sinner, such as me,
Nigh unto God.

Oh, fill me, Jesus, Savior, with Thy love!
Lead, lead me to the living fount above;
Thither may I, in simple faith draw nigh,
And never to another fountain fly,
But unto Thee.

And then when Jesus face to face I see,
When at His lofty throne I bow the knee,
Then of Thy love, in all its breadth and length,
Its height and depth, its everlasting strength,
My soul shall sing.

Mary Shekleton

Aren't these words so powerful?! That God's love is beyond our knowledge, beyond speech, beyond praises? Yet, our souls want to know more of this love, our lips want to tell more of this love, our hearts want to sing more of this love. Then she writes of this same love as the living water that forever quenches our thirst. And in death, our souls shall forever sing of this love.

Be blessed and shine with a love beyond!
